JENNIE GROSSINGER DAY--June 16, 2000
Grossinger, N.Y. - On June 16, 1968, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller made and official proclamation designating this day as Jennie Grossinger Day in New York State. This birthday tribute was the first time such a proclamation was issued to honor a living woman in the Empire State.

Jennie Grossinger (June 16, 1891 - November 22, 1972)was one of the leading lights of Catskills resort culture. Along with her family, she ran the Grossinger's Resort and Country Club in Grossinger, N.Y. Jennie was bestowed this honor by reason of her kindness and generosity. Her love for people shone through with most everything she did throughout her life. Her acts of benevolence, through personal charity and public fund raising events provided comfort and medical care for people around the globe. Her guest list included political figures, world-renowned scientists, movie stars, radio personalities, and sport figures. When people came to Grossinger's they where not treated as only customers, but as part of Jennie's extended family. To Jennie, success was not measured by bank statements but by the number of people who were happy with what she provided for them.

The Grossinger Hotel has been closed since 1985 but has recently been acquired by a joint venture of Cappelli Enterprises and Reckson Strategic Joint Venture Partners and soon will reopen as a world class upscale resort hotel. The Grossinger Golf course, one of the grandest in New York State is currently open to the public, and has recently been enhanced by a $500,000 automated irrigation system.
